Bread

The basis of my life used to be bread: breakfast, lunch and supper (and at times dinner), I always had a slight feeling that I had some sort of bread allergy, but as it turns out it was more like I was eating way to much bread!

I now restrict my bread intake to two slices of toast for breakfast or very occasionally some bread with a meal out.

The best breads I've found are:

Warburtons Wholemeal Small (440g)

At 58 calories a slice this is my breakfast toasting bread of choice as you are basically having one slice of bread as two small ones.

Warburtons Medium (400g)

The same calories (58 a slice) but for when you fancy white bread, again you get one slice as two so its a psychological benefit.

Burgen Soya & Linseed Brown Bread

Fancy a healthy option? Then I can highly recommend this bread, it has lots of added healthy extras such as Omega 3 , calcium and vitamin C and weighs in at 124 calories a slice (93 calories a slice for the 400g loaf).

Hovis Granary Original

At 92 calories it's healthier than the first two entries but (a bit) lower in calories if you are really concious of the numbers.

Allinson Wholemeal

My personal favourite of the non small loaves, this comes in at 110 calories a slice and has a good flavour and texture

Of course you are going to want to have some margarine on your toast if you want it to be non-dry, I've steered well clear of butter and light butter spreads or margarines made with butter milk as the calorie count shoots right up, the only spread I use is:

Flora Lighter Than Light

A 10g portion has 19 calories (My Fitness Pal rounds it up to 20) and as a guide enough spread for a slice of bread lightly applied is 10g. Also on weekends if I'm having baked beans snap pots or a small tin of spaghetti hoops (more on these in a later post) then I don't have spread on my toast at all, I just put the baked beans or spaghetti hoops on it, thus saving a few more calories.
